The Year Of Great Commission (Part 4): Human Factor 2 - Hard work
In this Year of the Great Commission, God continues to shape us not only spiritually but practically. If in the previous message we learned about preparation, now we are invited to embrace another essential human factor: hard work.
In Matthew 5:41, Jesus says, “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.” This principle of the first mile and the second mile reveals the difference between obligation and calling.
The First Mile
The first mile represents what is required of us. It is about completing tasks and responsibilities. It is about meeting minimum targets and fulfilling what is expected. The first mile includes:
Duties and obligations
Minimum targets
Basic responsibilities
What people expect from us
Many people live only in the first mile. They do what is necessary, but no more. They fulfill standards, but do not exceed them. While this may be acceptable, it does not reflect the spirit of the Great Commission.
The Second Mile
The second mile is different. Those who are willing to walk the second mile are people with a clear and noble purpose. They are diligent, and diligence becomes the strength that carries them toward their destiny.
Ephesians 2:10 reminds us that we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Life begins with basic responsibilities, but it must move toward divine destiny.
Diligence matters. Proverbs 6:10–11 warns that laziness invites poverty and lack. Scripture consistently teaches that a passive life cannot produce a powerful testimony.
The second mile transforms hard work into a witness. Why? Because it is done with joy, integrity, and a heart to serve.
Colossians 3:23 teaches us to do everything wholeheartedly, as working for the Lord and not for human masters. When our motivation shifts from pleasing people to honoring God, our work becomes worship.
Matthew 25:29 also reminds us that those who have will be given more, but those who do not use what they have will lose even that. Hard work, faithfulness, and stewardship position us for greater trust and greater responsibility.
At GBI WTC, we believe that believers are called not only to attend church but to influence the city with Kingdom values and impact the nation through excellence and integrity . The second mile lifestyle reflects that calling.
What Happens When Someone Practices the Second Mile?
First, there is transformation of character and mentality. A person shifts from a mindset of mere compliance to a mindset of contribution. They no longer ask, “What is the minimum I must do?” but instead ask, “What more can I give?”
Second, relationships expand. Trust and respect grow around people who consistently go beyond expectations. When trust increases, opportunities increase. Favor often follows faithfulness.
Third, influence and impact become wider. A second-mile spirit opens doors to greater promotion and responsibility. Not because someone is seeking status, but because their diligence makes them trustworthy.
Fourth, spiritual growth accelerates. As we practice diligence, the fruit of the Spirit matures in our lives, as written in Galatians 5:22–23. At the same time, the gifts of the Spirit develop and function more effectively within us, as taught in 1 Corinthians 12:1–12. Hard work in the natural often aligns with growth in the spiritual.
Closing Reflection
The Year of the Great Commission is not only about going to the nations. It is about how we live daily. The second mile begins in ordinary places: at work, on campus, in business, in ministry, and in our families.
When we go beyond what is required, we reflect the heart of Christ. When we work diligently with joy and integrity, our lives become a testimony. 🙌
Let us not stop at the first mile. Let us walk the second mile with purpose, diligence, and faith. In doing so, we become witnesses not only through words, but through excellence and character.
