Work Smart: Sharpening the Axe for Greater Impact
The Year of The Great Commission Series - Part 5
In a world that moves faster than ever, many people believe that working harder is the key to success. We push ourselves to do more, achieve more, and stay busy. Yet Scripture reminds us that effectiveness is not simply about effort—it is about wisdom.
Ecclesiastes gives us a powerful illustration: when an axe becomes dull, more strength is required to get the job done. The wiser choice is to sharpen the axe first.
A dull axe represents anything that reduces our effectiveness in work, ministry, relationships, and life. God never intended for us to become slaves to our work. Instead, He invites us to collaborate with Him and accomplish His purposes with wisdom and grace.
What Makes the Axe Dull?
1. Outdated Skills
The world is changing rapidly. Methods that were effective ten years ago may no longer produce the same results today.
Whether in ministry, business, or personal growth, we must remain teachable and continue learning. Refusing to grow can limit the impact God wants us to have.
2. Physical and Mental Exhaustion
Many people wear busyness as a badge of honor, yet constant exhaustion weakens our effectiveness.
God reminds us that our bodies are His temple (1 Corinthians 6:19). Ignoring rest eventually affects our health, focus, creativity, and spiritual sensitivity.
3. Lack of Planning
Starting tasks without strategy often leads to unnecessary stress and wasted effort.
Proverbs 21:5 teaches that diligent planning leads to abundance. Wise planning helps us focus on what truly matters and prevents us from being distracted by less important activities.
4. Wrong Motivation
Ecclesiastes 4:4 warns about working out of envy and comparison.
When our motivation is to outperform others rather than honor God, work becomes exhausting and unfulfilling. Healthy motivation flows from purpose, calling, and obedience to God.
5. Unresolved Conflict
Broken relationships drain emotional energy.
Conflicts with coworkers, leaders, team members, or even family can silently consume the strength we should be investing into our assignments. Reconciliation and healthy relationships are essential for sustainable effectiveness.
Wisdom: The Key to Working Smart
To succeed in God's calling, we need more than talent—we need wisdom. Biblical wisdom is the ability to understand God's Word and apply it to every area of life. It enables us to navigate challenges, make sound decisions, and fulfill our responsibilities effectively.
God never asks us to carry life's burdens alone. He provides wisdom for those who seek Him.
How Do We Sharpen the Axe?
1. Practice Sabbath and Spend Time with God
Jesus regularly withdrew to pray and seek the Father's direction (Mark 1:35). Before rushing into activity, we must first listen to God's voice. Time spent with God is never wasted time—it is preparation for greater effectiveness.
2. Develop Skills and Knowledge
Continuous growth is part of faithful stewardship. Invest in training, expand your knowledge, read widely, and embrace new technologies. The more equipped we become, the greater our capacity to serve God and others.
3. Plan Carefully and Set Priorities
Not all tasks carry the same weight. One practical principle is the Pareto Principle, often called the 80/20 Rule: focusing on the most important 20% of activities often produces 80% of the results.
Ask yourself:
- What tasks can only I do? Delegate the rest.
- Which activities most advance the vision God has entrusted to me?
- What responsibilities would create significant problems if neglected?
- Where are my strongest gifts and talents producing the greatest impact?
By focusing on these priorities, we work smarter rather than simply working harder.
Working with God, Not Just for God
The goal of the Christian life is not endless activity. The goal is faithful partnership with God. When we continually sharpen our axe through prayer, wisdom, learning, planning, and healthy relationships, we become more effective stewards of the opportunities God has given us.
As we pursue **The Year of The Great Commission**, may we not only work diligently but also work wisely—allowing God to guide our steps, strengthen our lives, and maximize our impact for His Kingdom.
