Walking With God (Part 02): Receiving God's Direction
Reflection from the sermon by Ps. Y. Wiryohadi — "Walking With God" series
In our journey of faith, there's one need we simply cannot ignore: God's direction. We need His guidance so that our steps stay right and we continue to grow. Especially in seasons of crisis, one of the essential spiritual skills every believer must have is the ability to understand God's direction.
How Does God Direct His People?
God doesn't speak in only one way. He communicates through various means, including:
Through the Word of God
Through dreams
Through an audible voice
Through visions
Through the circumstances we experience in daily life
Because God can speak in so many ways, we need a heart that is sensitive and open, so we don't miss His direction — whatever form it takes.
How Can We Become More Sensitive to God's Direction?
Spiritual sensitivity doesn't happen automatically — it's built through consistent habits and a consistent heart posture. Here are some practical steps we can take:
Read the Word of God every day, so that our mind and spirit stay aligned with His will (Psalm 119:105).
Learn to align our lives with the Word that has already been revealed to us, following the example Christ Himself gave in His prayer (Matthew 26:39).
Set aside time to commune with God through personal quiet time and family devotion (Psalm 5:3–4).
Grow in knowing what God loves and what He doesn't, through continuous fellowship with Him (Genesis 6:9).
Pour out our hearts to God — when we do, burdens and pressures are lifted, and peace fills our hearts.
Avoid being too busy, so that we don't lose our sensitivity to hear God's voice (Psalm 19:8–11).
Live a calm life so that we can pray — because when we're stressed, it's hard to clearly receive God's direction (1 Peter 4:7).
Learn to wait on God, for our strength is found in quietness and trust (Isaiah 30:15).
A Peaceful Heart, a Sensitive Ear
There's one important truth to remember: an anxious, worried, and troubled heart will find it hard to catch God's direction. For where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom and peace. Anxiety and worry actually become obstacles that keep us from hearing His voice clearly.
Something to Reflect On
This week, let's ask ourselves: have I set aside enough time to commune with God each day? Is my heart filled with anxiety, or with the peace that comes from trusting Him?
Let's learn to live calmly, wait on God, and stay sensitive to every way He speaks — through His Word, through our circumstances, and through our personal encounters with Him each day.
