Reflection from the sermon by Ps. Y. Wiryohadi — "Walking With God" series
Have you ever found yourself in the valley of tears, in the wilderness of life — going through failure, betrayal, or injustice — and wondering why God feels silent? This question is deeply human, and almost every believer has faced it at some point.
Why Does God Feel Silent?
Here's the good news: it's not because God is unwilling to answer. God's silence is not a sign of indifference — it's a sign that He is protecting us. Jesus Himself once told His disciples, "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now" (John 16:12).
There are times when God withholds an explanation, not because He refuses to answer, but because we aren't yet ready to carry the weight of that answer.
Learning From Joseph: A Process, Not an Explanation
Joseph's story is a powerful picture of this principle. The suffering he endured — sold by his own brothers, falsely accused, imprisoned — wasn't something that needed to be explained first. It was a process of preparation he had to go through. Joseph didn't receive an explanation in the middle of his suffering, but he received the shaping that prepared him for a plan far greater than himself.
Whenever God is silent, it doesn't mean He doesn't care. On the contrary, He is protecting us so that we can arrive at His plan whole and intact.
Four Conditions for Receiving God's Answer
There are four things that determine our readiness to receive God's answer and the fulfillment of His promise:
Timing — Is it the right time for us to receive the fulfillment of His plan? In His timing, God's provision happens supernaturally — never too late, never too early.
Maturity — Are we spiritually mature enough to receive what God has promised? A great promise requires character that has already been tested.
Capacity — Are we able to hold and carry out what God entrusts to us? (Psalm 105:21). God won't hand a great responsibility to a vessel that isn't ready to hold it.
Relationship — How close is our relationship with God? This is the most foundational condition of them all.
Close Friends, Not Strangers
We need to have an actual experience of walking with God, not just knowing about Him from a distance. Jesus said, "He who has My commandments and keeps them... I will love him and manifest Myself to him" (John 14:21).
Great secrets aren't explained to people we've just met — they're shared with close friends. If we become close friends of the Lord Jesus, we will receive revelation and understanding for our life's journey (James 2:23).
Trust and Walk in Obedience
In seasons that haven't yet been explained — the great unknown — our response shouldn't be to demand answers, but to trust God and walk in obedience to His word. In His timing, God will surely give us the explanation we need.
Something to Reflect On
Is there an area in your life right now where God feels silent? Instead of demanding an immediate answer, let's ask ourselves: have I been building closeness with God as His friend? Do I believe that His silence is a form of protection, not neglect?
Let's keep walking in obedience, trusting God's timing to reveal the explanation for every step of our journey.
