Reflection from the sermon by Ps. Y. Wiryohadi — "Walking With God" series

Every believer needs divine direction to keep their steps right and to keep growing. This isn't just an ordinary spiritual need — in seasons of crisis, the ability to understand and recognize God's direction becomes one of the most decisive life skills a believer can have.

The question is: how can we become more sensitive to God's direction amid the busyness and noise of everyday life?

Eight Steps Toward Spiritual Sensitivity

Here are practical steps we can begin taking to build sensitivity to God's direction:

  1. Read the Word of God every day. His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). The more often we read the Word, the more aligned our mind and spirit become with His will.

  2. Align our lives with the Word that has already been revealed. Not just hearing it, but living according to what we already know — following Christ's own example in His prayer at Gethsemane (Matthew 26:39).

  3. Set aside time to commune with God. Whether through personal quiet time or family devotion, consistent fellowship opens the space for us to hear His voice (Psalm 5:3–4).

  4. Grow in knowing God's heart. Through close, ongoing fellowship with Him, we become more sensitive to what He loves and what He doesn't (Genesis 6:9) — like the relationship between two friends who know each other well.

  5. Pour out our hearts to God. When we honestly bring every struggle to Him, burdens and pressures are lifted, and peace fills our hearts.

  6. Avoid being too busy. Excessive busyness can cause us to lose our sensitivity to hear God's voice (Psalm 19:8–11).

  7. Live a calm life so that we can pray. Because when we're stressed and under pressure, it's hard to clearly receive God's direction (1 Peter 4:7).

  8. Learn to wait on God. For our strength is found in quietness and trust (Isaiah 30:15).

An Anxious Heart Struggles to Hear His Voice

There's one important truth to keep in mind: a heart filled with anxiety, worry, and unrest will find it hard to catch God's direction. For where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom and peace — not unrest.

This means the first step toward divine direction isn't searching for answers in a panic, but first calming our hearts before God.

Something to Reflect On

Amid the challenges and decisions we need to make today, let's ask ourselves: is my heart calm enough to hear God's voice? Have I made time each day to read His Word and commune with Him personally?

Divine direction doesn't come to a heart that is panicked and rushed — it comes to a heart that is calm, trusting, and faithfully waiting on Him.
